Ohio’s state regulator just released the names of those applying for one just of just 24 cultivation licenses for the state’s medical cannabis industry, but very little else. According to the Ohio Department of Commerce, which revealed the list of names, there are 185 applicants all vying to secure one of these licenses. The state is limiting the number of licensed growers to just 24, who will supply all of Ohio.
Of the 185 applicants, 109 are competing for Level I licenses, of which there are only 12 available. A Level I license will permit up to 25,000 square feet of growing space for marijuana. The state also plans to issue 12 Level II licenses, which are smaller and permit a grow space of up to 3,000 square feet. There are 76 applicants for Level II licenses.
For a Level I license, the application fee alone is $20,000. Growers will have to pay a $2,000 application fee for a Level II license. Released by the department on Wednesday afternoon, the list of applicants includes their business names, contact names, and choice of license. However, it did not provide any other details, such as their proposed locations.
A state official did not return a message immediately when asked if more information would be forthcoming. Reporters were looking for details about the applicants’ just week, but the department’s lawyers turned them away, claiming the records not publically available yet. The final deadline for growers to apply for cultivation licenses was June 30.
Although the documents listing the 185 applicants did not include any of their proposed locations, the city of Columbus recently released data on where prospective growers wish to build within its limits. Its zoning offices made public the records of those 18 applicants. Back in June 2016, Governor John Kasich signed the state’s bill for medical marijuana, but laws have until September 2018 to come into effect.
Ohio will now allow patients with any of 20 specific medical conditions, including chronic pain, to use marijuana legally, which will become available to them at 60 dispensaries across the state. Just 24 of the following applicants will supply them, listed in alphabetical order:
